Feedback for TEST 1 

Overall the quality was adequate. Students who were given high marks integrated the situation with the requirements. 

Most students displayed a strong grasp of HRM relevance and legal frameworks. Many provided insightful examples, particularly in Q1 and Q2.

What can be improved:

  • Enhance responses by providing more depth, specificity and examples for each of the questions. 
  • Provide a stronger connection to employee outcomes and practical solutions. 

Example of Question 1 

Why is this situation relevant in Human Resource Management today? Include 2 sources (200 words)

In mostly any situation, Human Resource Management is relevant within an organization’s environment today. HRM helps employees resolve any possible issue they are dealing in a strategic manner. In this case, both Elena’s & David’s job descriptions were vague, simple in a way where looks like an easy-going job, but their supervisor had other plans for them. Human resource management is important today as it helps create a healthy and positive work culture. The happier the employees are the more productive they are within their working space. For example, let’s take these two newly recruited employees and put ourselves in their position Miss. Samy, let’s say we we’re continuously non-stop getting psychologically harassed by our supervisor, would our productivity and energy be in a positive way? The answer is no because we wouldn’t like the workspace we are working with. For the harassment coming from Elena’s superior the supervisor of both the Marketing and Development sectors only way to resolve this issue is to report her to the bigger superiors of the company with the help of her new colleague David.

Another example of Question 1: 

This situation is very important in Human Resource Management today because of clear job descriptions and the prevention of workplace harassment. When there are clear job descriptions, it helps ensure that the employees understand their roles and responsibilities on the job which is essential for effective performance in the employees and job satisfaction. (SHRM) (2020) When the roles are uncertain or confusing, employees like Elena and David feel overwhelmed and unsupported. This decreases their productivity on the job. Psychological harassment can also have severe effects on the employees well-being. It can lead to stress, anxiety and health-issues. As we see in Elena’s case, The research I have found is that such harassment not only slows down
productivity but can also result in high turnover rates as employees seek healthier work environments for them. (Heskett et al., 1994) Human resource management plays a crucial role in having a safe workplace culture by putting in the right
policies that address the harassment. By making employee’s mental health the number one priority and having clear communications, human resource management creates a more positive environment.

Example of Question 2

How can you align the laws of Canada and Quebec to the situation and each party? (200 words) 

In Canada, The Canadians Human Rights Act, and Quebec’s Normes Du Travail, plays an important role in protecting the employees from harassment and making sure there is a safe work environment. Under the Quebec’s Canadian’s Humans Right Act, Employees have the right to work in an environment free of discrimination and harassment. This means that Marriane’s comment towards
Elena could be seen as psychological harassment, which is not allowed. Employees have the right to report the issue without fear that they might be ignored. The employers are required to take on the issue seriously and address them appropriately. In Quebec, The Normes Du Travail also supports employees by stating that employers must protect the workers from psychological harassment. So creating a safe workplace where employees feel respected and valued. Marianne’s failure to support Elena and David and her nasty attitude towards the concerns they have violates these laws. Bill 42 was also sanctioned as of March 27, 2024. An act to prevent and fight psychological harassment and sexual violence in the workplace. This can also protect Elena and David from Marianne's hateful words.

Another example of Question 2: 

1.      The laws of Canada which are the Canada Labour Code and Canada Human Rights Act talk about the rights of employees, including treatment and protection from workplace harassment. Companies must provide employees with a safe and respectful work environment. The Human  Act lets us understand that it prohibits discrimination and harassment in the workplace, ensuring that all employees are treated with value and respect. When it comes to Quebec, there is the Quebec Labour Standards Act it is an Act that its working conditions to give employees treatment and protection from psychological harassment. There is also the Quebec Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms which protects individuals from discrimination and harassment, ensuring equal rights and freedoms are given to employees at the workplace. In this case, the psychological harassment Elena faces should be reported under both the Canada Labour Code and the Quebec Labour Standards Act, which require employers to be protected from harassment. David's job duties can be addressed by ensuring complaints with employment standards that require clear job descriptions and good treatment.

What was wrong with the job posting when they hired the employees? What could be done better? (200 words)
- Assess the confusion in the job descriptions and discuss how clear and specific job postings could have helped avoid role confusion and misalignment of expectations.

The job posting was misleading to the employees when hired because the work skills were not properly stated when applied. Elena was originally applying because she had the skills listed on the job posting to later find out that her upcoming duties will be out of her skill range, they should have written a more specific job responsibility example they wrote: “manage basic administrative
tasks related to marketing data and reporting” instead they should have wrote something like: “knows how manage data entries for software projects” For David I believe that they should've added the desired qualities into the skills required because it seems that he's not so eager to learn new technology and he enjoys working with his current skill set.

  • Here are the guidelines for TEST 2.

  • You have access to your notes, and internet. Generative Tools are allowed, but please reference them. 

  • This is a take-home exam, where you will have a chance to prepare in advance and will be given 1.5 hours to complete the exam. 
  • The exam will be open for a period of 24 hours, where you can start and finish within 1.5 hours. 
  • Consultation with your classmates is only allowed before the 24 hours begin. Upon traces and proofs of plagiarism, a grade of 0 is given to the student. This is an individual assessment of your skills. 

The TEST 2 opens at 7:00AM on October 23rd, 2024 and will close at noon (12:00PM) on October 24th, 2024. 
If you are last minute the latest time to use your 1.5 hours is at 10:30AM on October 24th, 2024. 

You must submit a .pdf format presentation. Links are not accepted and will be graded as no submission. 

 

Test 2 Deliverable: 

You will be given the task of creating a PowerPoint presentation of 6 slides within the timeframe of the examination about your current chocolate company. You can prepare the template prior to the test date. Sharing is NOT allowed. 

At the start of the test, you will be given a role and you will be tasked to build a presentation deck for the onboarding process of your own chocolate company.

What you can gather from your team members:

  • Gather as much information as you can about each of the members, their tasks and the report submitted in the HR Game part 1. You will be referring to these resources during your test. 

Preparation for TEST 2: 

  • Prepare yourself by researching how different companies onboard their teams and how they monitor the performance of their teams.  Part of the onboarding process, how do they welcome new members, guide them through the values of the company, the benefits they can receive (assume the company is in Quebec), 
  • Genevieve mentions many interesting components as part of the onboarding process and HR Planning.

Learning Objectives of this TEST 2: 

  • A lot of teamwork is done in this class, however this TEST 2 will be differentiating the skillsets of each student. 
  • Communication skills - how can you convey the message while planning for your Human Resource Team 
  • Conviction skills - the deliverable you produce needs to engage the audience and allow them to fully understand how things work at your company
