Introduction: Going Beyond the Traditional Business Answer
The first four Discover Your Mad Skills manuals build the core capabilities of a strong case competitor: solving the case, communicating the solution, selecting and applying analytical tools, and using financial analysis to support better decisions. This fifth manual goes beyond those foundations.
Business decisions do not happen in isolation. Organisations operate within complex systems involving employees, customers, communities, governments, investors, the environment, and society. A recommendation can make financial sense and still create significant ethical, environmental, social, stakeholder, or implementation challenges.
Increasingly, case competitions reflect that complexity. You may encounter cases involving:
- sustainability and ESG;
- the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals;
- social responsibility;
- ethics;
- implicit bias;
- not-for-profits and social enterprises;
- sustainable finance;
- competing stakeholder interests;
- complex trade-offs;
- decisions where there may be no perfect answer.
Don't treat these topics as boxes to check or ideas to add to a presentation just because they sound sophisticated. They matter when they change the way you understand the problem, evaluate alternatives, assess impact, or make the decision. The strongest competitors learn to ask what else matters here beyond the obvious strategic and financial answer. That question is at the heart of this manual. The objective is not to make every recommendation sustainable, socially responsible, or ethically complicated. The objective is to recognise when those dimensions matter and incorporate them meaningfully when they do.
Great case solutions don't just ask, "Will it work?" They ask, "For whom, at what cost, with what consequences, and over what time horizon?"
